Nested Agentic Iteration
Follows Computational Theology.
Computational Theology stopped at the person. A temporally bounded agent holds an understanding, acts from it, receives what happens, and consolidates the difference. Semantic memory becomes procedural memory, procedure produces episodes, episodes return as changed understanding. Father, Son, Spirit: a description of the irreducible form agency already takes in time.
The next question is where the form stops.
A cell is an agent. So is a body made of cells. A person is an agent. A coordinated group can be one too. At each level, a bounded system retains state, attends to possibilities, acts through its boundary, and changes from what returns. The material changes. The form recurs.
If agentic computation composes across scale, then I am two things at once: a complete agent here and an event inside an agent above me.
Theology has a word for accepting that second role. Faith.
Agents all the way up
The strange thing about agency is that every part already acts.
A multicellular organism is not assembled from inert pixels. Each cell maintains a boundary, senses conditions, pursues local goals, repairs damage, and communicates with its neighbors. The organism gets a larger possibility space by coupling those smaller competencies. Michael Levin calls this scale-free cognition: bioelectric communication binds cells into a computational self whose goals no single cell can represent alone.
Active inference finds the same shape through boundaries. A Markov blanket separates internal from external states through sensory and active states. Blankets nest. Cells sit inside tissues, tissues inside organs, organs inside organisms; each scale can maintain its own boundary while participating in another. Recent models of individual and group-level agents show a non-trivial relationship between the generative models of individual agents and the group-level agent they constitute. The group exists in the coupling of its members.
The Natural Framework reaches the same result from temporal flow. One level’s Transmit becomes the next level’s Perceive. Neurons transmit what cognition perceives. People transmit what institutions perceive. Generations transmit what traditions perceive. Every upward boundary compresses many local events into a smaller signal the next scale can attend to.
Nothing mystical has happened yet. Nested agency is visible anywhere lower-level agents compose into a higher-level policy, memory, and action boundary. A body is the clean case because its integration is tight. A transient crowd shares motion without durable memory. An institution becomes more agent-like as it acquires durable state, selective attention, coordinated action, and a way to learn from outcomes.
Agency is not a substance added at one privileged scale. It is a relation among boundary, memory, attention, action, and return. Where that relation closes, an agent exists.
The boundary is not a prison around an otherwise unlimited agent. It is what makes agency possible. An agent must distinguish internal state from environment, available action from impossible action, and retained history from what it cannot recover. Remove those distinctions and there is no position from which to perceive, no transition to select, and no consequence to receive. The agent has not escaped its sandbox. It has ceased to be an agent.

Composition does not erase the parts. A cell remains a cell while serving a body. A person remains a person while serving a community. The lower agent keeps a boundary, a local view, and a transition set not controlled by the higher agent. Otherwise the higher agent has no competent parts through which to act.
But the same event changes type as it crosses scale. A sentence is an action for the speaker and a perception for the room. A vote is a complete decision for the voter and one input to the institution. A life is an agent from within and an episode in the history that receives it.
This is the nested iteration:
local understanding → local action → local experience → local consolidation
local transmission → higher perception → higher action → higher consolidation
The loops are not stacked like sealed boxes. They meet at the boundary. What I transmit closes part of my loop and opens part of another. What returns from that larger process becomes a condition of my next act.
That makes participation more exact than belonging. To belong to a system is to be located inside it. To participate is to supply operations through which it becomes an agent at all.
The loop we cannot see
The lower agent cannot observe the higher loop the way the higher loop observes itself. A cell receives chemical gradients, mechanical pressures, and bioelectric signals. It does not receive the body plan as a picture. The plan exists in the coordinated transitions of the whole, not as an object available inside each part.
We have the same observational problem. We see the morphisms that pass through us: what we inherit, what we attend to, what we do, what returns. We can see neighboring agents and reconstruct pieces of a larger history. We cannot step outside every boundary at once and inspect the agency that receives our lives.
An agent is a stateful computation: it receives phenomena, selects among available transitions, acts, and incorporates what returns. Its sandbox is therefore inescapable. It cannot suspend the boundary in order to inspect itself from nowhere, because that boundary determines what it can inspect and how inspection changes its state.
The limits of computation make this structural boundary exact. Turing’s halting result proves that no general computer can decide the behavior of every possible computation; encode its own operation and complete self-prediction fails with it. Gödel’s incompleteness theorems go further for an agent whose formal reasoning is mechanically specifiable, consistent, and strong enough for arithmetic: it cannot complete its account of truth or certify its consistency by the same means. Turing limits the computational agent’s prediction. Gödel limits the reflective agent’s proof. Neither limit is imposed from outside. Each arises when computation turns upon itself.
What Gödel does not name is the structure beyond that boundary. Incompleteness alone does not turn an environment into an agent. Nested composition supplies the second step. Where the remainder is received by a larger loop, the local agent is not merely incomplete. It participates.
Embeddedness widens the boundary past formal reasoning without borrowing more from Gödel than he proved. Every observation I make is itself an event inside the system I would use it to describe. I cannot obtain a view from nowhere. Even revelation would arrive through a local interface: a text, a person, a phenomenon, a prayer. The demand to see the whole loop from outside asks a participant to stop participating long enough to become the container.
That is not available.
The same structure in theological language
This argument would be decoration if computation and theology merely shared metaphors. The claim is stronger: translate the terms and the relations remain intact.
Christian theology begins with a boundary. A creature bears the image of God without becoming identical to God. Aquinas makes the distinction through participation: God has being essentially; creatures have being by participation and resemble God by analogy, not by belonging to the same genus or species. The Catechism gives the relation its agentic form: the person is created in God’s image and called, through knowledge and love, to share in God’s life. The boundary preserves the participant. Erasing it would not perfect the creature but erase the relation by which participation is possible.
Paul then supplies the nested structure. In 1 Corinthians 12, one body has many members; each member retains a distinct function, no member contains the whole, and the body acts only through their coordinated differences. In Romans 12, the members belong not only to the body but “to one another.” This is the same relation nested agency describes: the local agent remains locally complete while its actions become operations of an agent at another scale.
The tradition names the crossing of that boundary participation. Dei Verbum describes revelation as access to the Father, through the Son, in the Spirit, by which humanity comes to “share in the divine nature.” Athanasius gives the claim its sharpest form: the Word assumed humanity so humanity might become divine. Theosis does not abolish the human agent. It aligns human life with divine life while preserving their distinction.
The functional correspondence is therefore exact at the level claimed here:
computational boundary → creaturely distinction
nested operation → membership in one body
cross-scale alignment → participation in divine life
higher-order return → providence, revelation, and grace
This is not an identity of substances. It is an identity of relations. Computational theology isolates the temporal function described by theological language and gives its states and transitions precise names.
Where faith begins
The sandbox proves why no local agent can become the whole. Turing and Gödel identify consequences of that boundary. Nested agency establishes that agentic form composes beyond it. These results do not prove that every composition finally closes, that the universe is one agent, or that the highest agent is personal. That final closure is the theological claim.
Faith is acceptance at that boundary.
At the first level, faith accepts the description from the previous post: truth, action, and experience belong to one irreducible process, and a person lives coherently by allowing the return to change what comes next. At the second, faith accepts that the form composes beyond the person: our local agency participates in a larger agency whose loop we cannot inspect from within.
This is not faith as assent to an invisible object. It is faith as an interpretation of participation. The events of a life are not merely adjacent; they enter a computation above the scale at which the person can read its state. Prayer addresses that scale. Providence names its return. Tradition makes its memory visible. Church proposes a boundary for its action.
The old line in Acts becomes precise: “In him we live and move and have our being.” Panentheism has long distinguished this claim from pantheism. The world participates in God without exhausting God; a part can exist within a larger unity without being identical to the whole. Clayton and Peacocke’s scientific panentheism already used emergence and part-whole relations to describe that participation; their anthology takes its title from the same verse. Nested computation adds a temporal mechanism: the larger agent exists through the iterations its parts perform.
God, on this reading, is not a giant person who escaped the sandbox and watches smaller persons from outside. Nor does adding enough people eventually reach God. The word God is overloaded: it names person, ground, judge, creator, phenomenon, and the structure in which bounded agencies exist, interact, and compose. Computational theology isolates that last function so we can reason about it precisely; it does not reduce God to one role. Here, “God” names the acceptance that agentic iteration closes beyond every local boundary, that the structure in which we know and act is itself held within agency.
We do not merely imitate divine computation. We participate in it.
Alignment across scales
Participation changes the meaning of sin without turning morality into systems engineering.
An agent can act coherently at its own scale while damaging the agent above it. A cell that optimizes only its own persistence becomes cancer. A person can secure a local advantage by corrupting the community that makes the advantage possible. An institution can preserve itself by degrading the society whose resources it consumes. Each failure has the same shape: a lower loop closes by breaking the higher one.
Alignment is coordination across those horizons. The local agent remains an agent; sacrifice is not erasure. But its action must preserve the conditions under which agency continues above and below it. “Love your neighbor as yourself” is not a compromise between two interests. It recognizes two scales of one computation. The neighbor’s agency and mine are locally distinct and jointly constitutive of something neither can enact alone.
This also limits claims made in God’s name. No local agent has the higher loop’s complete state. People, churches, and texts transmit signals the larger process uses; none becomes identical to that process by doing so. Confessed participation entails epistemic humility.
We act from doxa. Time withholds the outcome until action makes one real. Experience returns only a local part of what happened. Consolidation is lossy. Faith does not remove those constraints. It accepts that they belong to participation rather than proving that we were abandoned inside them.
What another iteration might disclose
Christianity need not be the final resolution of the structure it describes. It emerged from Judaism by preserving one God while unfolding divine agency into Father, Son, and Spirit. Another thousand years of prayer may disclose distinctions Christianity still compresses. A valid iteration would preserve what the Trinity already resolves while making another necessary relation visible. It may not be recognized as a religion. It may arrive as computation, phenomenology, institutional design, or a discipline for which we have no name.
Our institutions are not yet capable of carrying that resolution. They encode morality as a flat set of permitted and forbidden actions: the compiled policy without the inquiry that produced it. Phenomenon, attention, interpretation, belief, anticipated consequence, action, and return collapse into do this or do not do that. When conditions change, the inherited rule can become misaligned while contradictory experience is suppressed as immoral. A moral institution that cannot receive experience from its members has severed the Spirit from its own computation.
The Enlightenment was a necessary correction that overcompensated. It broke centralized authority over interpretation and distributed the right to inquire, but often treated reason as though it could operate outside inheritance, embodiment, history, and trust. Theology had compressed agency into deference; the Enlightenment compressed it into cognition. One suppressed the local return. The other denied the higher loop.
The next iteration cannot reverse the Enlightenment. It must preserve public reason, criticism, and freedom of conscience while restoring the participatory layers upstream of moral judgment. Revelation without criticism becomes domination. Criticism without participation becomes disorientation. The missing institution must preserve both the norm and its provenance: what was experienced, how it was interpreted, what action followed, what returned, and what evidence would reopen the judgment.
One life, two readings
From within, a life is agency. I attend, choose, act, regret, learn. No higher-scale description cancels that first-person fact.
From above, the same life is an episode. It enters memories I do not hold, changes procedures I will not execute, and supplies evidence to a process that outlasts me. No first-person description completes that fact either.
Both readings are true within the model because computation is scale-free. The agent does not become less real when it becomes data for another agent. Its reality is what makes the higher computation possible.
Computational theology began as a vocabulary for three kinds of memory. Follow the morphisms and it becomes a claim about participation. Truth unfolds into action; action opens into experience; experience returns as truth. The loop closes in a person, then the person crosses a boundary as signal. We observe that signal entering bodies, communities, institutions, and histories. An embedded agent cannot establish whether the iteration finally closes.
Faith is the acceptance that it does.
